As a rule of thumb when open in the summer, a swimming pool should only lose up to 1/4 inch in 24 hours. Every pool will have some normal evaporation when open for summer, but the rate varies due to the pool’s wind/sun exposure and temperature along with other contributing factors. (Covered pools during the off-season should experience little to no water loss. Customer should also take into account if they’re running water fixtures such as waterfalls, fountains, or slides as this can also lead to higher than average rates of water loss).
The most tried and true method for leak detection in residential and commercial swimming pools, is the diver survey. Our divers are trained to know where to look, and what to look for when it comes to leaks in your pool. Through a careful survey pattern, our divers will look over every square inch of your liner and take time to comb through any other fixtures you may have in the shell of your pool. Other tools may be implemented (to test light housings, search skimmer boxes, etc.)and for pools with low visibility or confusing to the eye liner patterns, we can always rely on our Leaktrac 2400 by Anderson manufacturing company, which uses electrical currents to hunt down even the smallest pinholes in your liner. When the diver finds an area that raises suspicion, he then confirms a leak by implementing a basic dye test (shooting a small amount of colored dye at the suspected damage and watching to see if the dye leaves the pool from this point). Dye tests are also used to test that a repair is holding properly.
Bob the diver and our crews specialize in diver surveys along with the diagnosis and repairs of damage in the shell (liner and inner fixtures) of your swimming pool. Although we may be able to diagnose a plumbing leak through process of elimination in your shell, the best way to know if your plumbing is leaking is through a pressure test performed by a trusted pool company/pool professional. If you are unsure which area of your pool you want to investigate first, visit our “Key questions to consider before hiring a leak detection company” section on our website for helpful information, including steps to take to narrow down the area of your leak, and instructions on performing your own plugging test.
Yes. Pests (most commonly carpenter ants and termites) are known to wreak havoc on pool liners, opening up hundreds, even thousands of very small pinholes that may be concentrated in areas or spread throughout the whole shell. Severe insect damage is difficult to repair and may need hours of patching and repair work. What’s worse is if the infestation is an active one, the battle will be uphill as more damage may become apparent within weeks or even days. Unlike other leak detection companies who charge per patch , we charge a flat rate for our surveys and will repair liners to the best of our abilities.
